Back to Basics Series – Day 9

4th April

Finishing

The woven cloth is returned to the mill to undergo finishing. First, every length of cloth is examined for imperfections and any broken or stray threads are mended by skilled darners. Next, the cloth must be washed to remove impurities and milled to tighten the weave and soften the “handle”. The cloth is then ready to be dried and passed through the cropper which removes any loose surface fibres. Finally, the cloth is steam-pressed to give it a smooth finish.
