1960’s Stornoway Mills Map
30th October
A closer look from the archives at the ‘mills map’, which is kept under proper conditions at Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean.
This unique map details the many Harris Tweed® mills that were located around Stornoway in the 1960’s, with only the Harris Tweed by Kenneth Mackenzie Ltd mill still in place in the present day.
On here you’ll see 9 companies spread across 15 locations in the town, with the Harris Tweed Association Ltd office on Garden Road also highlighted.
A fascinating insight into how the industry in the main town of the Isle of Lewis looked in the middle of the last century.
Let us know any stories you have, or if any family worked in these locations, from back in those days – we’d love to hear them!
