Bliadhna Mhath Ùr
1st January
Bliadhna Mhath Ùr / Happy New Year to you all.
New Year’s day is a time of reflection for many, and in the Outer Hebrides this often takes the form of remembrance for the Iolaire disaster.
Over 200 men returning home at the end of WW1 drowned when the HMY Iolaire sank on the Beasts of Holm, at the mouth of Stornoway harbour, in the early hours of New Year’s Day 1919.
We bumped into James this week, who is up from Glasgow visiting family, and noticed he was wearing this ‘Iolaire’ Harris Tweed® jacket – so thought it would be an appropriate time to highlight its significance to the history of our islands on this day.
All at the Harris Tweed Authority would also like to take the chance to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2026.
